And so it begins...

It's that time of year folks. Strap yourselves in, it's going to be a bumpy ride! So how are we all feeling about exam season? Are the students prepared? Are they taking it seriously? Are they overwhelmed? Anxious, nervous? Perhaps. As the fallout from the pandemic has shown, it has been a struggle, a battle. I feel I have done everything I can to prep my students and support them. From evening revision to weekly drop-ins and targeted support. But am I doing too much? Are WE doing too much? There has been one heck of a cultural shift following on from Covid. I think there's been less concern and anxiety from the students as I would expect. It feels like there's a shift in how they view their exams, and the impact this could have. Are they lethargic...hmmm... possibly; but I'm not sure that's it. I think it's a lack of appreciation about how important these exams are and how important it is for them to grasp the reigns. It's been lost somewhere, behind the back of the sofa perhaps. Am I worried? Yes. And no. I know I've done everything I can. I think that we need to work on getting back to a shift in stance on who is responsible for the students' outcomes and their learning. I guide, they do. They are responsible for their own learning and taking responsibility and ownership. And I need to stop trying to spoon feed them. And as the headlines suggest, it's going to be another year of terrible results. But I have that niggling feeling in the back of my mind that reminds me, education is more than just exams. Perhaps I'm just trying to reassure myself. Who knows. Anyway, what are your thoughts? Do you sense a shift in attitudes towards exams? In the students perhaps? Are they as nervous and anxious as you would expect, and have they been working hard enough? And finally, do you have any coping mechanisms or suggestions as to how we can move the responsibility back to the students? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section or the forum. And good luck to everyone! TTL
