Attendance 'crisis'. What can we do?

Writer: Jonathan MillerJonathan Miller

Attendance has gotten worse. Much worse, since the pandemic. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause for this, no doubt it's a mixture of issues stemming from the pandemic, government policy and issues with funding. We're not sure how others feel about this and how your experiences differ but one thing is for sure, this is a crisis. It's not only an attendance issue, but a mental health issue. We're finding that more and more students are experiencing mental health issues and concerns; they struggle to find methods of coping with their mental health and with the lack of funding and staffing for mental health support, this is an issue that won't go away any time soon. What can we do? What are your thoughts, your tips, your suggestions? If you are trialing any initiatives in your schools/colleges, then please share these in the Forum. Is Labour's plan the answer... who knows? Keegan says it's her 'number one priority', yet this is a crisis that has only snowballed under the Conservatives watch. It's probably time some actual action is taken, right?
