The Department for Education says 'pupil and staff safety is paramount...' Yet the schools are crumbling and the heating doesn't work. How is it that children are wearing coats and gloves in lessons because the buildings are not fit for purpose? This is infuriating. With the government's own figures indicating that, on average, primary schools in England need £300,000 of investment and secondary schools require a whopping £1.5 million! That's just to bring them up to satisfactory standards. If the government was truly serious about competing internationally with outcomes for education then surely they would not have left our buildings behind. How can proper learning take place if these are the conditions teachers and students are working under? Or is the situation more nuanced than this? The government would probably argue that 'record amounts' of funding have been invested into schools. There are 'record amounts' and then 'real-terms' amounts. You can't pull the wool over our eyes, although in this case it may make teaching a little warmer... What do you think? Comment below.
