Teacher Pay Rise

Writer's picture: Jonathan MillerJonathan Miller

Well. It's about time! Teachers across England this academic year can expect a salary boost of the full 5.5%, as recommended by the School Teacher's Review Body (STRB). This was accepted in full by the Chancellor. And what's also pleasing is that this will be fully costed! This is great news, meaning that the top scale salary will increase by around £2,500 to just over £49,000. However, there are some drawbacks here. Support staff will not necessarily receive this as it only applies to classroom teachers in maintained schools. Not academies. Furthermore, FE colleges and stand alone sixth form colleges are also not set to receive this award. This is mightily frustrating given that sixth form teachers that are attached to high schools will get the award. There is so much inconsistency here; this surely needs to applied across the entire educational sector? Will the unions ballot? Probably.
