Hi there! This is my first time teaching A-Level and have just got onto the British Study Period section of Y105. I am going to start introducing the essay question to my class. Does anyone have any advice on what to tell the students in regards to structure of their essays?

Hi! The students are expected to cover provenance, tone and context of the sources. You can treat each source in isolation and there is no requirement to make links as such between them (although it can help if you do depending on the question). I start with tone of the source and whether it supports or challenges the issue in the question and encourage students to comment on the contextual issues. Making judgments is crucial. I then ask students to discuss the provenance and how this may impact on the validity of the source. Read exemplar answers, these definitely help.
